Rubber Mulch — Landscaping
PlaySoft Rubber Mulch is an excellent alternative to loose woodchips or soil. It is a permanent solution around tree pits, flower beds, walking paths and helps prevent erosion. There is little to no maintenance after installation and is a natural looking product. PlaySoft Rubber Mulch is anti-fungal; averts nesting of insects; permeable and will not deteriorate.
Ure-tech Surfaces Inc. meets/exceeds all current ASTM and CSA Z614-14 standards. Testing results upon request.
Specifications
Design Criteria
a.) The Surface System shall have been marketed by name within the United States for at least ten (10) years. Canada for minimum five (5) years.
b.) The installation of the Surfacing specified herein and indicated on the Drawings shall be performed by an organization who can furnish supporting evidence of rubberized surfacing installation experience, a company regularly engaged in this type of work on a full time basis for a period of not less than 10 years.
c.) The installation of the Surfacing must be executed by Poured-in-Place applicators who are factory trained, authorized PlaySoft installation contractors.
d.) The installation of the Surface must be validated by a factory authorized representative.
Submittals
a.) Samples:
1.) Submit Samples of the following for approval by the Engineer.
a.) 12 inch x 12 inch samples of the safety surface, 2″ depth of material compressed.
Product Testing: To include…
a.) Permeability:
The finished surface shall be tested in accordance with ASTM 1551 and permeable DIN 18-035 to ensure proper permeability of water to root ball.
b.) Slip Resistance: Wet dynamic reading shall not be less than 40 when tested in accordance with ASTM E 303, using British Portable Skid Resistance Tester.
c.) Flammability: Minimum Critical radiant flux of 0.22 Watts/CM2 when tested in accordance with ASTM E 648.
1) Particulate Rubber Particles must successfully pass ASTM standard CFR 1630 for flammability of carpet and rugs.
Site Conditions
a.) Manufacturer’s current installation methodologies and procedures must be used and followed on the Project.
b.) Do not proceed with work during inclement weather. Comply with manufacturer’s recommendations for application and curing under specific climatic conditions.
c.) Conditions of substrates with respect to structural performance shall be evaluated and approved by the applicator prior to applying the surfacing.
d.) At the time of application ambient air temperature shall be a minimum of 10° Celsius until installation is complete and rubber is fully cured.
e.) Adjacent material and the surfacing shall be protected by the Customer during the installation process, while curing and while unattended, and from weather and other potential site related damages.
Site Preparation
a.) A stable Sub-Straight is required along with use of Geo-Textile membrane fabric for weed-blocking and aiding in percolation.
b.) When preparing a new tree pit for a PlaySoft installation the root ball must be settled into pit and earth must be allowed to settle around root ball. Recommended compaction of earth, 4 inch layers with soaking of water to achieve maximum compaction. All vegetation, wood mulch, or any other items that may result in composting causing voids in the earth must be removed.
c.) When preparing final grade of earth allow a maximum of 50mm depth for PlaySoft rubber mulch. Earth must be compacted and graded level to prevent humping of the PlaySoft rubber material.
d.) Tree rings that do not have any borders where rubber is to be terminated trench 4 inches deep, install rubber and terminate into trench cover over rubber when cured to prevent any vandalism or lifting of edges.
e.) If borders are required for PlaySoft Rubber Mulch mulch, stone, brick or cement are recommended. Cement must cure 30 days prior to bonding rubber. Aluminum or steel edging must provide a mechanical rough surface. Will not bond to plastic.
If bonded to Asphalt with the expansion and contraction of both materials cracking of asphalt will occur along where both are bonded together. This method is not recommended.
Weather Conditions
a.) Temperatures: minimum 10° during the day and evening hours throughout installation period for the rubber surfacing to be installed. Note: With cooler temperatures rubber finish will be noticeably more rough than a typical in-season installation.
b.) UTS Binder is moisture cured with the presence of water. Sub-base cannot have any puddling or standing water when applying rubber. Once base rubber is applied, the rubber must be free of wetness from dew and/or frost or rain prior to applying top wear course.
c.) When applying multi-colour rubber patterns, the bonding edges must be dry or foaming will occur. This includes bonding to all perimeter materials such as brick, concrete, wood. etc.
d.) Rubber should be protected at all times against frost during the curing of both base and top wear course to prevent freezing of the uncured binder which can cause premature wear and or failure of the performance of the rubber.
e.) October 30 will be the cut off date for starting new installations, unless temperatures are favourable. All installations after this date are subject to a sign off on our Weather & Temperature document.
f.) If temperatures are below 10° tenting and heating is permissible. Tent must be constructed in such a way to withstand weather conditions of fall and or winter weather.
Materials
Primer: Single component moisture cured UTS- 136.01 polyurethane primer.
Binder: An elastic polyurethane pre-polymer with minimal odour, excellent weathering and binding characteristics. The use of UTS- 136.01 Urethane is specific to and required for this project. Supplier must receive written authorization prior to installing the product which verifies use supply of urethane specified for this project. No as equal urethane substitutions are permitted. UTS- 136.01 is supplied by Ure-Tech Surfaces Inc. 1-866-211-0191.
Standard Binder (UTS 136.01) will amber and change the appearance of the finished rubber, usually more noticeable when mixed with lighter colours. Aliphatic binder (UTS 151.01) is recommended for non-yellowing.
UTS Binders are purchased for both the base and top rubber from North America Suppliers. Proof of Purchase/Origin of materials upon request.
Rubber Granule: Size ranges from 1/4″ to 3/8″ per granule, is free from cotton/polyester cord strand, and 99.9% wire free clean recycled waste stream rubber.
Rubber Buffing: PlaySoft coloured rubber buffing is specified. PlaySoft consists of 100% recycled tire-buffing product which may be coloured by way and use of iron oxide pigments. PlaySoft rubber buffing material is sole sourced by Ure-Tech Surfaces Inc. 1-866-211-0191. No as equal raw material substitutions are accepted.
The body of loose-fill rubber mulch buffing consists of rubber particles ranging in size from 3/8″ to 1/2″ that meets or exceeds the following criteria:
- Rubber Buffing Material is Non-Toxic
- Rubber Buffing Material is Anti-Fungal
- Rubber Buffing Material is Non-Absorbent
- Rubber Buffing to Avert Nesting of Insects
- Buffing must be a Long-Strand Rubber Fiber Particle
- Rubber Buffing Material Passes Long-Strand Water Permeability per USTC Test Procedure
- Rubber Buffing Pass Accelerated U.V. Colored Buffing Test Rating a ‘No Change when exposed to 420 AFU’s – Testing Methodology AATCC 16E for loose-particle Rubber Buffing
- Buffing Material Must Pass Accelerated Wear Test Rating when bonded by Urethane showing ‘No Change’ of 20,000 foot counts – Testing Methodology CRI TM-101 for rubber bluffing bounded together as a solid surface for rubber walk
- Long-Strand Rubber Buffing Material Passes ASTM E 303 Test for Skid Resistance
- Long-Strand Rubber Buffing Material Passes ASTM D412-98a Test for Tensile & Elongation Properties
- Long-Strand Rubber Buffing Material Passes ASTM C501-84 (96) Test for Abrasive Wear
