Area Calculations
Need help measuring areas? Choose the shape, or combination of shapes that most closely match your play area. For very irregular shapes (typical in playground areas), use the offset method below.
Irregular Shapes (Offset Method)
First measure the length of the longest axis. Divide it into equal sections. At each point, measure the distance across the area perpendicular to the length line. These are your offset lines.
Square / Rectangle
These shapes are defined by the opposite sides being straight, parallel, and of equal length.
Circle
The area of a circle is found using the constant pi (3.14). Select your known measurement below.
Triangle
Multiply the length of the base times the length of the height, then divide by 2.
Trapezoid
Find the average length of the parallel sides (A + B)/2, then multiply by the height.
Oval
Multiply the width times the length, then multiply the result by 0.8.
